It started out as just another Sunday. But something was going to happen that would forever change the course of pizza destiny. (How’s that for melodramatic?)
On Sunday 26 March 1995, a popular fast food chain launched a completely novel idea and then spent over $45 million marketing it (using Donald Trump, of all people).
This was the dawn of the stuffed pizza crust. Since that cheesy Sunday, the stuffed pizza crust has become a much-loved style of pizza around the world. (And boosted the pizza chain's revenue by 10% in that first year.)
"I'm proud of my invention. After years of research we saw people always liked more cheese on their pizza and that most people don't eat the crust." – The inventor of the stuffed pizza crust, Tom Ryan.
Stuffing a crust with cheese, sausage and other delights turned out to be a great way to increase a pizza's appeal and get people buying more.
We wouldn't suggest offering stuffed crusts for all your pizzas (it takes longer to make and will be more expensive). However, this is a novelty dish that if done correctly could become your restaurant's signature.

THE DOUBLE-STUFFED CRUST
An inner crust stuffed with cheesy chicken sausage and the outer with three cheeses.
Why not get your customers involved in the creation process and ask them to submit their ideas via your social media channels? Find an idea you like, test it out and then offer it on your menu. You can even name the pizza after the customer who submitted the idea. Fun, fun!
